Create a subject

Add a subject, attach it to classes, and assign the teacher who teaches it.

You are a campus admin setting up your curriculum, and you need to add a new subject — say Mathematics — then make sure it shows up for the right classes with the right teacher in front of them. This guide takes you from creating the subject all the way to putting a teacher on a class.

Before you start

You need staff access to your campus with permission to manage subjects. If you don't see Subjects under Manage in the sidebar, ask a school admin to grant it. To assign a subject to a class, that class (and its streams, if it has any) must already exist on the campus.

Step 1: Open Subjects

In the left sidebar, open the Manage section and click Subjects. You'll land on the Subjects page, which has two tabs near the top: O-Level and A-Level. Click the tab for the level you're adding.

Step 2: Create the subject

Click Create Subject (top right). A Create Subject panel slides in. Fill in:

  • Name — the subject's full name, e.g. Mathematics. (Required.)
  • Code — a short tag, e.g. MATH (optional).
  • Level — pick O Level or A Level. It defaults to whichever tab you were on.
  • Compulsory — turn this switch on if every student must take the subject; leave it off to mark it as an elective.
  • Description — a sentence about the subject (optional).

Click Create Subject to save. A success message confirms it, and the new subject appears as a card on the matching tab.

Compulsory or elective

The Compulsory switch only labels the subject — it shows a Compulsory or Elective badge on the subject card. You still choose which classes take it in the next steps.

Step 3: Open the subject

On the Subjects page, click the subject's card. This opens the subject's own page, with its name and code at the top and a Class Assignments section below.

Step 4: Assign it to a class

In the Class Assignments section, click Assign to Class (top right). In the Assign to Class panel:

  • Class — pick the class from the dropdown, e.g. Form 1 (Grade 8). (Required.)
  • Stream — if the class has streams, you can pick one, or leave it on All streams to assign every stream at once.

Click Assign. The class now appears in the Class Assignments list.

Adding one more stream later

To add a single stream to a class that's already listed, click the three-dots menu on that class row and choose Add Stream.

Step 5: Assign a teacher

Find the class row in Class Assignments, click its three-dots menu, and choose Assign Teacher. In the Assign Teacher panel:

  • Staff Member — pick the teacher from the dropdown. (Required.)
  • Stream — if the class has streams, choose one, or leave it on All streams to put this teacher across the whole class.

Click Assign. The teacher now shows as a small avatar on the class (or stream) row.

Different teachers per stream

A class can have a different teacher for each stream. Assign one teacher with a stream chosen, then repeat for the next stream. Leaving the stream on All streams applies that teacher everywhere at once.

What happens next

  • The subject appears on its level tab on the Subjects page, with a Compulsory or Elective badge.
  • Each class you assigned shows in Class Assignments, with stream rows underneath if you assigned specific streams.
  • Each assigned teacher appears as an avatar on the class or stream, and the Teachers count on the subject's page goes up.
  • Students in the assigned classes can now have this subject in their timetable and gradebook.

Removing an assignment

To take a subject off a class, open the class row's three-dots menu and choose Unassign class. To remove just one stream, use the delete control on that stream's row. You'll be asked to confirm first.
