Naalya Handbook

Manage templates

Give teachers a standard starting point — create scheme-of-work and lesson-plan templates, and publish them so they appear in the picker.

You're a school admin who wants every scheme of work to follow the same structure — the same sections, the same table of weeks — instead of each teacher inventing their own. Templates are pre-built documents teachers can start from: you author them once, publish them, and they appear in the Start from picker whenever a teacher creates a scheme or lesson plan.

Before you start

You need template management access (Templates appears in the school admin sidebar only with it). Note there may also be ready-made templates provided by the platform — those show up for teachers automatically alongside yours.

Step 1: Open Templates

In the school hub's sidebar, click Templates. The page — "Curate scheme-of-work and lesson-plan skeletons for teachers to start from." — lists your school's templates.

Step 2: Create a template

Click New template. In the dialog — "Teachers will start their scheme of work or lesson plan from this skeleton." — fill in:

  • Name — e.g. Term Scheme of Work.
  • Description — optional, a line about when to use it.
  • TypeScheme of work or Lesson plan. The type matters: a scheme-of-work template only appears when a teacher is creating a scheme, and likewise for lesson plans.

Click Create template and the editor opens.

Step 3: Build the skeleton

Write the structure teachers should start from — headings for each section, a week-by-week table, prompts like "Learning objectives:". Keep it a skeleton: the teacher fills in the substance.

Step 4: Publish it

A template starts as a draft, invisible to teachers. Publish it when it's ready — from that moment it appears in the Start from picker on new schemes and plans of its type. Unpublishing pulls it from the picker without affecting documents already created from it.

What happens next

  • Teachers creating a scheme or plan see your published templates (and any platform-provided ones) in the Start from dropdown, alongside Blank document.
  • A document created from a template is a copy — editing or removing the template later never changes documents teachers already made from it.
